For IR I read "Riding Freedom" It was a Book about a girl that was in a orphanage only for boys. She was the only girl. She was helping out in the kitchen and taking care of the horses. Her name was Charlotte and she was about 13 years old. She loved to ride the horses and race with some of the boys.

But, one day she didn't want to be there anymore because her best friend which was a boy, got adopted and she would be alone at the orphanage with no one to talk to. So, she decided to runaway and become a boy. But, before she left she made a promise to the boy and told him that she will find some place for them to live in the future and the sign that says, "Private Place." She rode the horse cattle and went into a new town and she changed her name to Charlie.

I think the theme was that get away from somewhere you don't want to be at and fulfill your dream with something you want to do. And thats what Charlotte did, she left the Orphanage and she went through so much after that, but her dream came true. She worked hard and she earned money to buy a land. She met that boy later on in life and they spend time together like the old times in the Orphanage.

I think it was a good book, it's pretty short and easy to read. I think a lot of people that likes sad stories and Happy Endings would like this book. The front cover is a horse, but it's not so much about the horses. It's more about her adventure and how she is changing. I think most people would like this book because it is very easy to understand. I enjoyed this book.

A book that I have read for IR this year is a book called Darwin Awards. The books is about stupid things that people have done that normal would think is crazy or dangerous to do. The book has articles and personal accounts of the things that the people have done, it also sometimes has comments or information that can help people understand the story.
I think that the book is very funny but at times it makes me say to myself "why would somebody even think to do something like?" I think that the message of the book is to tell people that there are people who just don't have enough common sense to tell them to do this or they don't have enough knowledge to know that doing this may kill them. I think that this is a really important message because it shows us that we should really start thinking before we do something and that the consequences of doing something that seems cool maybe fatal.
I would recommend this book to other 9th graders because this book is really funny at times and it may teach us thing that we shouldn't and how we should always listen to our common sense.

the book i read so far is about a gang called run baby run. this book is mostly about gang, drugs, alcohol, and fights. its kind of like a sad story. the main character is a 16 year old kid who doesn't know how to fight thats getting chased by a gang.
no one helps him. he's all alone. but he never gives up. he tries to get in a different gang but its not that easy. in this book, if you want to to join a gang team, he/she has get jumped by every member in the gang.
later on he becomes one of the member and gets stronger and stronger. so basically, this book is about a weak boy gets stronger at the end. i don't really recommend this book to the 9th graders because they might be an bad influence. but i recommend this book to people who loves actions.

One of the book that I read for IR is the Little House on the Prairie. This book is about a family who looks for a new place to live, and settles to an indian country, in Kansas. So from there, they start all over again, and build houses, hunt, meet indians, and also meet wild animals like the wolves. But also they meet new neighbors there that are really kind to them, and they live happily in that prairie.

This book's theme is that going to new places might be difficult, but it is also a unique experience. So you should also try new things. My view on this message is that I also do think that it is important to sometimes challenge new things. So I think that sometimes it might be hard, but you will never know what it will be there, if you try new things. So I think you should do them sometimes, without being afraid to scared to do them.

I wouldn't really recommend this book to other 9th graders that like adventures, of a story with strong climax. I wouldn't recommend it to them, because this book doesn't have that much of a adventure. It isn't also just one story with one issue, but it is like the family moving into the prairie, and tells many episodes that happened. So all the chapters has a different kind of story that occur to that family. But if you like to read stories that doesn't have many actions in it, and it just tells about the normal life in the prairie, then I would recommend this book.

The book I read this year for IR is The Esperanza Rising. This book was about the girl, who was very rich in Mexico where her father owned a farm. She was happy and joyful there, with servants taking care of her. She loved her father, and his saying was "wait quietly for the apple to fall in to your hands." But her father died, because this one men wanted to marry Esperanza's mother. That men set a fire on their houses. They lost everything.

Hostensia, one of their servants, was going to America with her family. So she asked Esperanza's family to go with them. Esperanza didn't want to go, but her mother said they will. They had to leave Abuelita. She didn't like it at all. When they were at America, they lived with Hortensia's relatives. Esperanza's mother worked. Esperanza was made fun by Marta and her friend because she didn't know how to sweep. She decided, that she would learn soon.

Lots of bad things happened, her mother got sick. Strikers threw rocks at them. She was made fun by others. She said bad thing to Miguel, she didn't mean it to. But, she never gave up. At last, her mother was back again and Abuelita was back, too.

I think the book's theme is to "never give up the hope." Because Esperanza means hope in Spanish. She never gave up, and she was able to have joy in America, too. She didm't have money, but she was happy. I would like to recommend this book to other 9th graders because this book was very interesting for me to read it. I was never in this condition that I have to work to feed my family. No one threw rocks at me. My dad is not dead, he is very healthy. But, by reading this book, I started to think what will happen if these things happened to me. Then, that made me very thankful for what I have right now. Maybe it is just a normal thing to have family and house, but it is something that we need to be thankful everyday.

one of the books i read for independent reading was titled "The Escape Factory". This was a pretty good book in my opinion.I do recommend this book to other 9th grade boys who like action and world war 2.
the book starts off with an american military personnel in london learning about a new branch called
MI-9. This branch helped POWs to escape from nazi camps. they would send "loaded" parcel that contained small tools for escape. some had tiny hacksaws, compasses, and maps. so when the military dude found put he asked the pentagon if the USA could start one too. so when he got the okay to start one he called it MIS-X.
so the story is written in 3rd person omniscient.
this one guy is trying to gather facts about MIS-X later on but some of the operatives are dead or really old.I do recommend this book to other 9th grade boys who like action and world war 2. this book also has a really good message too, to me it says (this is mainly for war or if you find yourself captured for doing something right) do all you can to come home.

One of the books I read this year for IR is Let the Circle Be Unbroken. This is a sequel to the book i read from last year in 8th grade called Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. The authors name is Mildred D. Taylor. This book is about how African Americans were treated bad back then and how they would do anything to try to be equal with the caucasians. This book also talks about how African Americans were often accused with many criminal things, even if they didn't do anything.
In this book a African American child named T.J. was accused of murdering a caucasian man and he is scheduled for a trial. In this trial, the people who had actually done it are saying that they saw this boy do the crime. They told the judge that he had a gun under his mattress and he used that to murder the man. I think this book is very interesting because it is telling us how the African American people back then were treated and what they have to go to. Even though this book is not non-fiction it tells many true facts of what they went through.
I would recommend this book to some 9th graders because it tells many interesting events. The words are not grammatically correct because the people back then were not that educated but it is still a good book. This is not the best book I have read but I think when I get more and more into the book I would start to like it even more. I hope that a 9th grader reads this book next year because they will learn that people back then had a harder life then we do now.

So far i read a slave book called Elijah of Buxton. It is very exciting. The white people are very scary and messed up. Im glad i'm not a black man in North America from those days.

H lives in a place in canada called buxton. A free settlement. Then one day slave catchers arrive to try to kidnap people but they are hiding in the woods.

This book is full of suspense because the white people are hiding in the woods and they seem like ghosts and you don't know if they are there or not. People here noises and about white guys trying to get to Buxton but you don't see them.

Then Elijah s friend is kidnapped. So elijah goes after his friend in attempt to rescue him. That is the story of the book. i don't wanna give it all away. Plus Elijah is the first to be born free in the settlement so i guess he is the oldest of his peers.

READ "ELIJAH OF BUXTON"!!! Written by Christopher Paul Curtis.

For I.R im reading (SunRise Over Fallujah). This book is very interesting. Its about how a guy getting to the middle east to fight in the war against iraq. He has a couple of friends. He was a mission with his 4 partners. He is just getting use to his partners and where he is.

The book is very interesting to me because its not written with proper language. The book has language like actual army people would talk like. In this book I feel like if i was actually there watching it happen. the book has a little bit of profanity but its nothing to serious. So I think this book is very interesting because of how the author writes it just catches my attention.

I think this book should recommended to other kids in 9th graders. Because though your nine grade year u want to read something with fun not a book that is like super boring like (When The Monkey Fell Out Of The tree). I think this book is just right for ninth grade boys, the way the author right you can tell that he's not a person that write just to write, he write like if was there and it really catches my attention so I do recommend this book.

The book I read for this year IR is Steal Away ...to freedom. The author of this book is Jennifer Armstrong. The book talks about a girl name Susannah and slave girl named Bethlehem. They run away from Southern Plantation where Susannah's uncles house.
The books main theme was about a girl who runaway from her uncle's house grown up and have family and become a grandma and tell her daughter's child the story. I think the message to this story was to tell her daughter what happened to her live after she runaway and why she runaway from her uncle's house.
I would not recommend this book to other people because i got confused in the middle of the story. i don't know if everybody is going to get confused on this book but i think this book was hard. It talked about two different story, maybe thats why i got confused. It talked about the past and what was happening to her right now.

9th grade Samuel Harding
The book is called When The Whistle Blows by Fran Canon Slayton. It is a historical fiction book. This book talks about the old days in the 1940s and mostly is abut how the world is like to the main character. The main character is called Mike ,his dad and Bill that is his brother.
The story starts out talking about railroads and how there where cool for children. Mike and Bill really likes to look at steam trains running on railroads. In the old days the steam trains were totally new for them. The father also has a buissiness on trains so the children respected him a lot.
The story goes into how the main character, Mike will grow like his dad and have a job like him. His dad teached Mike as his best he can do. A soon later Mike will know how trains are more wonderful then he was thinking. The society grew and more railroads formed in America. There was much more transportation and steam trains made. Mike finally grew in to a adult and got be a engineer.
This book told me that there is no thing that is impossible. I kind of thought it was boaring because I do not like trains that much.I still want to recommend the other 9th graders to read it because it tells a important message and how Mike never gived up. I really enjoyed reading this book and learned about not giving up.

One book I have read was called "Diary of a Young Girl" which was written by Anne Frank. She began writing in this diary before World War two and during her time in hiding.
I would recommend this book to another ninth grader because you can learn not only about her, but about how similar her perspective is to our own. While I read this book, I noticed that how she thinks and her emotions are sometimes what many other people think whether they have problems or a nice day. As we grow older, we learn from our many mistakes. We also understand a variety of things which we didn't understand before.
Anne experienced a variety of things during this time which we might not be able to experience in our life. For example, she found and realized what her personality was. She didn't search for it, she created it and eventually changed and grew. Anne Frank told many people around the world her experiences, both her bad and good days. I believe she changed many viewers' views on the world. Even though everyone have both bad and good days, we can still grow and make changes to ourselves and to this world.

On the boys then saw .... uncles bike next to a bush and found him bargaining with some stranger. The uncle then said that it was nothing and to go home for dinner or his mother would get upset. So, the next race they went up to this hill expect Elsie went with them. They boys then went to Henry's grandfathers's little hut by the port. They ended up getting all dirty from the dead-lily thing and had to get washed up right away.
(beginning)
The books theme was adventure. It was a very interesting book to read I like how it made me so interested in the story line. I think the plot of the story is very intriguing. i would like to recommend it to 9th graders because the story has a twist which makes it very interesting

The book that I read for IR reading is called Jackie and Me. It's about a boy named Joe Stoshack. He loves sports and tries to always mix sports in with his school work. He has to write a report for black history month. He ends up picking Jackie Robinson. Luckily for him, he can use baseball cards to go back in time to the time period of the information on the baseball card.

Not only does he learn about Jackie Robinson, but he also learns about baseball itself. He learns about the huge discrimination they used to have. Jackie did not fight back or anything when he was insulted and picked on for being the only African American in Major League Baseball. He simply brushed it off and used that hatred to get better at baseball. Joe learns about patience. He teaches himself to try and keep calm. This was important to him because there was a pitcher in little league that always insulted him and his race.

I dont' think I would recommend this book. Although it does have interesting parts, it is fairly easy to read. A lot of people in the my 9th grade class aren't very big sports fans either. Maybe other sports fans may take interest though. It is not that high in grade level but still a good book overall.

The book i am reading in IR right now is Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen. I just started reading this book. It is about a boy named Cole, he is 15 years old. He is a bad person, he would always get in trouble by the police and stuff.

Cole's parents didn't really care about him, they were happy that he had to leave. One day, he robbed a hardware store and trashed it. Cole bragged about it at school, then a person ratted him out. Cole got mad and beat him up. He got caught by the police and had to go to juvenile. Cole meets a person named Garvey, he starts talking to Cole about the Circle Justice.

The Circle justice is about when you do something bad, as for punishment you would have to help the person or do something. Cole would always get one last chances from parents and police, but he would always do it again. One day, Cole was sent to somewhere in Alaska. He had to stay with the Indians and they were called Tlingit. He has to stay there for a year so he can learn and be good.

For IR reading, I read the book "Sarah Plain and Tall" by Patricia MacLachlan. Sarah Plain and Tall is a really easy book to read and its really short, but really interesting. Sarah Plain and Tall is about a family of three, which used to be a family of four, but their mother had died giving birth to the youngest son, Caleb. Their Papa wanted to find a new wife, and a new mother for his kids. So Papa posted an advertisement on the newspaper for a wife.

So this girl named Sarah Elisabeth Wheaton from Maine saw the advertisement and wrote a letter to him. She told him about where she lived and about her life. So then Caleb, Papa, and Anna write to Sarah and ask her all kinds of questions. But, the main question they wanted her to answer was does she sing. They were so curious about if she sang or not because Mama used to sing with Papa all the time. Caleb and Anna loved it when they sang.

Then after a while, since Papa and Sarah got to know each other through letter, Sarah finally came. She came during spring. Sarah told them how it was really different from Maine, she said that there were seashells, dunes, and the ocean everywhere. But, she still stayed. She helped around the house, cooked, and she even helped fix the roof before a big storm came. She loved the chickens the most out of all the animals on the barn that Papa owned.

I think the main theme of Sarah Plain and Tall is about getting to know someone. I think so because the kids really didn't know about Sarah at all at first but then they still were eager to learn about her. They soon later found out that she was a great person and they were excited to meet her and have her come over. They even got so close that when Sarah left by herself they thought she wouldn't come back so they started crying. I would recommend this book to 9th graders, even though its really easy to read, because its a very good book and it shows how sometimes maybe things will turn out good after all.

For IR, I read the book called "Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie". This book was about a boy who's an 8th grader and he has usual teenage problems. But his problems were kind of unusual. He plays drums in a jazz band for a high school because he is really good at it. He is also in love with a girl named Renee and she's very attractive and it is hard for him to keep his mind off of her.
The boy's name is Steven and he has a mom, a dad, and a little brother named Jeffery. Jeffery is in kindergarten and he is a pain to Steven. He says the unnecessary things at unusual times and always embarrasses Steven. One day they find out that Jeffery has leukemia and the whole family is in their depression and they start becoming poor. The teachers find out about it and they're all nice to him.
He has a best friend named Anette and she is always there to help him out. When she finds out that Jeffery has leukemia, she is always trying to help Steven in any kind of way. One day, Anette and Renee who hardly talked to each other came up with a great idea. The idea was about having a charity concert to raise money for Jeffrey and help out the family. This made Steven very happy because it would help the whole family.
I would strongly prefer the other 9th graders to read this book. I liked it very much and I'm sure that they'll like it too. I would prefer this book to everyone especially those people that are going through their harsh times. I think that it'll encourage them to keep moving forward because that's what Steven did. This book made me think about myself and how I shouldn't worry about the little things but think more about the big things. It also taught me that it is good to have a person that you can share your problems with.

I am reading a book called "Weedflower" by Cynthis Kadohat. This story is about a girl named Sumiko and her life before and after the Pearl Harbor. She felt different from everyone around her because she was the only Japanese-American, but she had her family to be there on her side always. They were warned that they were going to be bomed someday but they weren't aware that the someday meant soon.
The time came and the government forced all the Japanese-American to go to the internment camps. Before that, Sumiko and her family tried all their best to throw and burn away their things that showed proof that they were Japanese too. But because the place wasn't safe anymore, they decided to move to another place and ended up in the internment camp.

I think the theme of this book is to be ready anytime of what's going to happen because we are not that much aware of what's going on around us. For example, we don't know when we might get attack or going to have war. We don't know when were going to die either and we can die anytime. We have to appreciate the things we have right now from God and enjoy it before it's too late. From this theme, I learned that I should be satisfied of what God has given for me right now because if i don't right now then it might be too late later on.

I think 9th graders should read this so that you would understand a person's life during the war and his or her experience. This is also a very touching story. It will help them to learn to appreciate what they have right now.

For IR I read called, "chosen" by Ted Dekker. The main character in this book is Johnis. He is a chosen by Thomas, the leader, along with 3 other fighters. There names are Darlsal, Billos, and Silvie. They were chosen by Elyon, their god and they worship him. They belived that he gave them life on earth and perfect water. They also believe that he chose people, mainly young adults to fight and be a hero for their tribe.

They had a mission and their mission was to kill the Hordes. The Hordes were people that was evil, scaly diseased and they live out in the desert. You can become one of them if you didn't drink water or even bathed. So the four fighters went out to the desert and kill the Hordes, because the Hordes wanted to have a war.

Johnis, the main character was caught in a dream, although it wasn't a dream. A roush, (some kind of animal) came up to him and introduced himself. He told Johnis that he was chosen by ELyon. He told the roush (michal was his name) that he was no fighter. He was chosen by the leader of the tribe(thomas) Although Michal told him about the missing books and they were no ordinary books. They contain both good and evil and they are very powerful. they have to find the books before the evil teelah gets it before them and destroys the world.

I think that the theme was to get the books before the evil one gets it. I also think that its all about teamwork. All four of them depends on each other and they need to work hard to get the books. That was the main point of their mission. It's not just killing a Horde, its about finding the books.

In my opinion about the book, I think it was one of the best book that i've read so far. It was very interesting. Even though this book has so mainly series, OCSI have almost all of them so far. I think people might be interested in this book because it's very good and it gets you addicted to make you read it some more. :)

I read "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry. The setting is taken place in Denmark around 1943 World War II. Annemarie Johansen is a little 10 year old Danish girl living in a neighborhood surrounded by Nazi soldiers. She has a best friend named Ellen Rosen, who happens to be a Jew. The Nazis are trying to take out the Jews from Copenhagen, Denmark, so they have no where to go and no money to provide for themselves since the Nazis are closing down shops and everything else owned by Jews. When Nazis find out that the Rosen family are Jews they relocate them but Ellen moves in with Annemarie and her family, trying to convince the soldiers that Ellen is part of the Johansen family. Meanwhile, Annemarie is going to have to do something that is very dangerous just to save her best friend's life. Like what Annemarie's father told Annemarie once, "all of Denmark is the bodyguard of the King". Annemarie also told herself that all of Denmark would be the bodyguard of Denmark's Jews.
The theme is that you should have courage to fight for what is right. To have courage to save your love ones. To not be afraid of people who put you down, and be there for people who need you. Make a difference!
You should stand up for what is right, and do good in the world. Don't be scared to say what is in your mind. Don't just sit there and wait for change, you should make the change. If you really love the people in your life, do all that you can to protect them and to be there for them. Life is a sacrifice.

For IR I read "The sign of beaver". This was about a boy who lived in the big city but moved to the forest. I this forest there were a couple tribes in that forest. But one tribe that he communicated with was the beaver tribe.

I think that the books theme was about getting along with people you don't know. I think this because even though the boys were from different back rounds. They were friends even though in the beginning the tribe boy was forced to be friends with the american to learn how to read and write. In the end you could say that they were really close.

Also the theme could be that we can learn things from different people. I think this because the tribe boy helped the american boy with setting traps for little rodents. Also how to make a good fishing hook if the metal one breaks. THat is one theme that I think it might have.

I think that this book would be a good for other 9th graders. I think this because it is short and easy to understand. Also I think it was fun to read about a relationship.

For Ir this year i read Prey by michel Crichton. In the book Prey their is a lab trying to make a small robots for military uses. The main character is a scientist that works at that lab. His job was to make a behavior code for the robots.

The robots were originally designed as a swarm of bugs with cameras so they could spy on enemy soldiers and were too small to shoot. the reason he joined was because his wife was acting weird and got into a accident so he needed to support his family.

The machines were designed to be predators. when they made the machines the experiment went wrong then they attacked people and reproduced them selves at a fast rate. Im still reading the book so i don't know the conclusion but i highly recommend it.

The book I read for IR this year is, "L Change the World". The book was about the detective and a group of terrorist. This detective's name was L, and no one knew his real name. He was a genius, and solved many other problems.

This story stats where the group of terrorist tries to make a new type of virus. The virus was the killer virus, and they were trying to let the virus to all over the japan. L found this out, and solve all the problems. L and his team made the vaccine for the virus.

I think this book's message was to use your life wisely. The main character's life was about few weeks, and he used that for saving the world. I would recommend this book to other 9th graders, because it is really fun to read.

dI am reading "Susannah" by Janet Hickman for Ir. It is about a girl who is living with another group of girls of
different ages. Her mother died not so long ago, so her father is making her stay with the Shakers. She is not a Believer. Susannah's father is making her stay where she is, but she does not want to stay. Her great-aunt Margaret wants Susannah to come with her, but her father says her mother would want her to stay, too. Meanwhile, trouble is beginning to brew.
This book's theme is don't forget where you come from, and everyone has faith in something. Susannah has all her memories of how her life once was, and she keeps reminding herself of them. She wants to hold on to her past because that is the time she wants to go back to. Her life has changed in many ways, but she misses the past more (how her mother was there for her). Susannah has some faith that maybe things will work out for her, even through the situations. I think this message applies to my life in many ways. I like to hold on to the past
to remember where I was before. It helps me see how much my life has changed and how much has improved.
I recommend this book to other 9th graders because it lets us see life from a different perspective. We learn how life was for people with different beliefs, and we can relate to the characters in many ways. We learn that life is way better than it was before no matter what problems we go through. Our lives will be seen with new light.

One book I read is "Plain Jane" The story was a bout One of king henry VIII's wives.
