Reading Assignments

9th Grade Reading Assignment: 12/17/07-2/11/08

--Every ninth grader is responsible for reading The Education of Little Tree, and at least one book of your choice, between now and the end of J-Term. We return to regular schedule, including English class, on 2/11.
--Please create some form of study materials to assist you with remembering the information in the book. Ideas include but are not limited to: taking notes, writing chapter summaries, creating an outline of the events, making lists of characteristics seen in each characters, writing down page numbers and quotes of what you think is important, all of the above.
--You WILL BE expected to demonstrate your knowledge of this reading material immediately after J-Term.
--If you need help understanding the class book, I am available to answer questions or assist with reading, by appointment (before or after school, from 1:10-3:00 pm, or during lunch) throughout J-Term. Regularly scheduled Study Hall is also an option.
--These, and other books you choose to read on your own, may be counted towards 3rd Quarter AR Points. Don’t forget to write them down on your AR Points sheet!

Exam Reviews

Review Sheet: 9th Grade Semester Exam
--Literary Elements from Romeo and Juliet and True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle (20: no word bank)
--Vocabulary from “Trifles” and Short Story Unit (21)
--Use, apply, and identify parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs.
--Understand and apply subject-verb agreement.
--Review the readings you have done this semester: be able to explain and apply conflict, dynamic characters, and the theme of “people need to escape from feeling trapped.”--Writing portions will be graded for content, writing style, and grammar/usage/mechanics: be sure your answers are complete, and that you read all directions and prompts very carefully!

Review for 12th Grade Semester Exam:

--Study literary elements (30)
--Study Vocabulary from Canterbury Tales and Hamlet
--Identify parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction, interjection: 6 of eight, not including prepositions or pronouns)
--Understand and apply subject-verb agreement--Prepare to write in response to an essay prompt asking you to analyze your own thinking and opinion concerning the themes covered in MULTIPLE READING SELECTIONS this semester.
