Hello OCSI Students! I am looking forward to seeing you in J-Term next week. I hope that your J-Term reading is going well.

Course description: As stated on the OCSI Course Catalog, “Psychology is an introductory course that will introduce students to the study of psychology, its methods, theory and research, and history. The course will explore psychological facts, principles, and phenomena associated with some of the major subfields of psychology, such as theory and history, research methods, sensation and perception, states of consciousness, motivation and emotion, development, stress, and abnormal behavior. All of these will be examined from a Christian perspective.”

I hope you are having a great summer! Don't forget to work on summer reading! Remember, that's a total of three books -- the book from the nonfiction list, the book from the fiction list, and the class book (for 9th -- Animal Farm and for 12th -- The Tale of Two Cities ). The assignments will be collected the first week of school. You can also expect for the class-assigned book to be testing within the first few days of class.

Please contact me IN ADVANCE through e-mail if you need help on your assignments or want to make a special request for a specific book.

--A4-sized binder with A4 Loose leaf paper for all assignments, except for journal.

Class Name: Sociology

Course description: Sociology is an introductory course in the area of behavioral science. The course reviews the ways cultures and social groups affect human behavior through social status, institutions, and changes in society. Students identify and apply sociological principles and the scientific method to various aspects of their lives and society.

Class Activities: Class activities are designed to develop the students’ understanding of sociology and their communication skills. These activities include but are not limited to: reading in class (independently and in groups), writing to examine and explain their thoughts, working actively both individually and with others, viewing and analyzing media, and demonstrating their understanding through tests and projects.

You will need the following materials for this class:
-- A4 or B5 Loose leaf paper for all assignments, except for journal.

An important note on J-Term:
Remember, you are completing the responsibilities for 78 class periods (the equivalent of ONE FULL SEMESTER for which you will receive ½ credit) in a month. You are basically participating in a double-block academic class, which actually is a faster speed than what you will be expected to maintain in college. Take your assignments seriously and stay organized!

Anne Bradstreet was another writer from the Puritan era. Margaret Atwood wrote more recently, but she wrote ABOUT a real woman in the Puritan era who was convicted of witchcraft, hung, and survived.

Choose ONE poem and write a response of several paragraphs. Explain how the poem adds to your knowledge of the time period, and how you personally reacted to the information and/or emotion expressed in the poem. Be specific!

--Finish annotating "The Old Bird, a Love Story."

--Respond to each of the following questions in a paragraph each:
1) What is the author’s basic belief about the individual, society, or life, as shown in the story?
2) What connection does the title have with the conflict or theme of the story?
3) Describe both the type and specifics of the conflict used in the story. Was the author effective with his or her use of this conflict?

--Create and revise strong thesis sentences for each of the questions/responses above, as if you were going to use the questions to formulate essays. (In-class essays are pretty normal for college evaluations, so it’s important to be able to get the main point in a clear thesis quickly.)

--Quick write (about a paragraph): Why is understanding an author’s point of view, feeling, or attitude important?

--Check your e-mail for information on your Persuasive Research Project. You need to read everything, and fill out (either by printing, or writing out on paper) and complete:
1) Topic selection with rationale and a working thesis

I am excited about having your child in my class, and I am committed to high expectations and standards for your child’s behavior and academic performance as we work together to prepare your child for their senior year of high school.

One of the ways I can communicate my high expectations while helping your child to become a better student overall is by increasing the quality and amount of time spent reading. Research suggests that there is a direct correlation between students’ high test scores and the time they spend reading. Your child can raise test scores significantly over time by spending thirty minutes a night reading.

Dear Parents and Guardians:
I would like to welcome you and your child to high school, and to 9th Grade English at OCSI! I am excited about having your children in my class this year!

The students do have some work ahead as they adjust to the increase in academic responsibility and freedom that the change from middle to high school brings. I am committed to high expectations and standards for your child’s behavior and academic performance, as we work together to prepare your child for a successful high school career, and later, a transition to college and career.

Please continue to help me encourage your child to spend at least thirty minutes a night reading. Research has shown that this activity correlates to strengthened test scores, including on standardized tests that are considered in college admittance and scholarships.

A current leader in educational practice, Harry Wong, states, “The more the school and the family are joined as partners in educating young people, the greater the child’s chances for success.” I agree, and ask your support towards this effort. In order to help me learn more about your child and how to work with him or her in class, please take some time to look over the syllabus and the policies and procedure sheets, and to fill out and sign the information sheet.

Course description: As stated on the OCSI Course Catalog, “Freshman Literature is designed to improve students’ reading and writing skills. Students write for various purposes, including a research paper, and they work on using resources to improve their writing. Students also read a variety of literature from around the world.”

Class Activities: Class activities are designed to develop the students’ communication skills through reading, writing, and speaking. These activities include but are not limited to: reading in class (independently and in groups), writing to examine and explain their thoughts, especially on the subject of literature, working actively both individually and with others, and demonstrating their understanding through tests and projects.

You will need the following materials for this class:
-- A4-sized binder with A4 Loose leaf paper for all assignments, except for journal.
-- B5 or A4 Notebook for journal: must be consistently used. (Obviously, if and when the notebook is full, you’ll buy a new one, but don’t change notebooks every week.)
-- Pens/pencils.
-- IR book, or another novel as assigned by the teacher.
-- Assigned workbook of Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics: McDougal Littell, 2001.
-- Assigned textbook copy of Language of Literature: McDougal Littell, 2001.
-- Assigned textbook copy of Language Network: McDougal Littell, 2003.

Your grade will be based on the following:

This English course is an elective course designed to prepare your child for performing at the college level, and the workload and course content will reflect that goal. Therefore, this course will be intensive and require ample time spent on all areas of communication. Your child should expect to spend time – both in and outside of class – preparing for written assignments as well as speeches.

Research suggests that there is a direct correlation between students’ high test scores and the time they spend reading. Your child can raise test scores significantly over time by spending thirty minutes a night reading. The higher the test scores are, the more scholarship opportunities your child will have.

Bazaar News!

The annual OCSI Bazaar is scheduled for Saturday, March 21st, this year. 10th graders and their parents will be working with the 11th grade class and the K5 classes to run the Household Goods/Used Clothing -- RATHER LARGE -- section.

Please send me or Mr. Maupin an e-mail if you are interested in helping that day or in preparing for that day! We will also be sending home a letter with more information this week.

Dear Parents and High School Students,

You are invited to OCSI for two dates over the next few weeks where you can receive important information about your child's education!

A week from today, on Friday, October 24th, Mrs. Hadley will be leading College Information Night! This session will begin at 7 p.m. in the OCSI Cafeteria. Please come and bring your child for information on college choices and preparing for college!

On Friday, October 31st, we will be having Parent-Teacher Conferences for first quarter report cards. We encourage you and your child to meet with the teachers in the cafeteria from 8:30-12 noon, and from 1:00-4:00 pm, on that day.

Summer Reading Program 2008

OCSI Middle and High School students are required to read THREE books over the summer in order to build their reading and independent work skills. Research shows that consistent reading over the school breaks is necessary for students to stay academically on target with their peers. Schools in the US offer similar opportunities to their students during secondary school, and we want our students to have that same advantage.

The three books will consist of:
1) A book assigned to the grade as a whole
2) A fiction book to choose from a list
3) A non-fiction book to choose from a list

n OCSI will issue the book that the whole class is assigned during the last week of school (if already registered for the upcoming school year) or at the point that registration is complete (if after the last week of school) to each student.

The issued books are as follows:
Incoming 6th graders: The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
Incoming 7th graders: Bridge to Terabithia
Incoming 8th graders: The Bronze Bow
Incoming 9th graders: Animal Farm
Incoming 10th graders: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

n Students are responsible for securing the second and third books (one from the fiction list, and one from the nonfiction list). They may secure the books in one of the following ways:
-- Purchasing through Scholastic Book Clubs, prior to summer vacation.
-- Purchasing through personal means, such as Amazon.com.
-- Borrowing the books from the OCSI Library.

n Students are advised to read the books from the fiction and non-fiction list FIRST, for the following reasons:
-- The fiction and non-fiction books, because students may read different selections, will most likely NOT be tested with an objective test. Students will be required to complete an alternative assignment (a project, a speech, a discussion with the teacher, a book report, a signed statement, etc) in order to show that they have completed these books, as determined by the individual teacher.
-- Students should be prepared for a test on the class-assigned book immediately after fall semester starts in August. Students should read this book closest to the start of school so that it is fresh in their memory.

n On the class assigned book, students will be required to complete and turn in an assignment when they return their books and take their tests. The assignments are designed to help the students to become more familiar with the reading material on their tests.

Students Entering Grades 6/7/8
For EACH chapter of your book, complete ONE of the following activities:
1) Write a paragraph summarizing the plot.
2) Draw and label a picture that shows the plot.

Students Entering Grades 9 and 10
Complete each of the following activities as you read your book:
--Make a list of the characters. Who are they? What parts do they play in the plot of the story?
--In at least a paragraph, describe the setting (where and when the story takes place). How important is it? Does it help set a mood?
--In a minimum of three paragraphs, respond to the following questions: What's the plot? Tell what the problem or goal is and how the main character is trying to solve/achieve it.
-- In a minimum of three paragraphs, analyze the theme(s). What message or lesson is the author trying to get across?

Students Entering Grades 11 and 12
Your tests will be a combination of objective questions (multiple choice/true-false/matching/quote identification, etc) and subjective questions (short answer/essay, etc). Prepare accordingly.

It’s your choice how to address your study plan. Your assignment (to be turned in) is to develop at least two pages of work that have served as your study guide for this book.

OCSI is looking for high school students to help with both the OCSI Summer School Program (June and July) and the Active English Program (July and August). Interested students can apply for either one or for both of the sessions.

These are paid positions.

We are studying the Romantic Period in 12th Grade British Literature. In order to take a closer look at the poetry from the time period, each student analyzed one poem and represented their analysis visually. 12th Grade Extra Credit Option

We will be reading part of Frankenstein in class on Monday. You may read the complete Frankenstein text for extra credit (worth one test grade) for either 3rd or 4th quarter.

In order for this grade to count, after you finish the reading, you must pass a test with an 80% or higher.

Upcoming Events and Various Information

1) This week, each student received a Dress Code Survey. This is for parents to read and fill out. The administration will take into consideration your views when deciding Dress Code policies for 2008-2009. Please return these as soon as possible.

2) Progress Reports will go home this Friday, 3/7, for students who have earned a C- or below in any of their classes.

3) Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for Friday, 3/14. Secondary teachers will be in the cafeteria all day (from 9 am-12 noon and 1 pm-4:30 pm). Parents and their high school students are invited to come and speak with students! I look forward to seeing you there.

4) The Annual OCSI Bazaar will be held on Saturday, March 29th. We are still looking for parents or high school student volunteers to help the day of the Bazaar. Please let your homeroom teacher know if you are available.
